Newcastle United are reported to have shown interest in Scottish full-back Andrew Robertson earlier this season, and Liverpool announced on Thursday that he would be leaving the club at the end of his contract.

Robertson moved to Merseyside in 2017 from Hull City, and has been part of the club’s success over the last nine years. The full-back is the current vice-captain at Anfield.

Back in February, Caught Offside reported on interest from St James’ Park after a late January move to Tottenham Hotspur had fallen through. With Kieran Trippier announcing he would be leaving Tyneside on a free, the 32-year-old could play a big role in replacing his leadership.

Reports claim Roberto De Zerbi’s side are still maintaining their interest, while Atletico Madrid, Napoli and Juventus are also lurking.

Liverpool star dubbed ‘The Flying Scotsman

Robertson is well known in the Premier League for his high intensity pressing, combined with his defensive and attacking qualities.

The player’s attacking numbers may have diminished with age, but he can still pull magic out of his hat, as he did in the FA Cup earlier this season with a sweet strike against Wolves.

Last summer, Milos Kerkez moved to Merseyside, and he has become the clear first choice left back at the Reds, which has left the Scottish international on the bench more often than not.

Robertson will be looking for more chances to play more regularly, and that may come at Newcastle United.

Another reason why members at St James’ Park may believe he is a key target for the summer is the success he has delivered for the Reds.

He has won two Premier Leagues, two Carabao Cups, the FA Cup, the Champions League, the Club World Cup and the Super Cup.

With Trippier leaving, adding a player like the current Premier League champion to their squad would add an extra layer of stewardship to their squad, as they look to turn the corner after what’s been a disastrous season.

Would Robertson want to join Newcastle United?

With everything he can offer the Magpies off the pitch, questions must be asked about on the pitch.

It’s not that Robertson is a bad player, but 21-year-old Lewis Hall has nailed down his position on the team this season, as he is one of the favourites to be Player of the Year at the club.

While fingers have been pointed at certain individuals for not pulling their weight, the same can’t be said about the English left-back.

Robertson has made it clear that he wants to be playing football, but he will likely get the same treatment on Tyneside as he does on Merseyside, where most of his minutes are from the bench.

He would be an option for Eddie Howe to have in his squad, but it seems unlikely at this stage that he would think about moving to the North East.
