Newcastle-linked Giorgio Scalvini opens door to future move abroad

Newcastle-linked defender Giorgio Scalvini has revealed he would like to play abroad during his career, despite recently signing a new Atalanta contract.

The Italy international discussed his ambitions at a press conference on Wednesday, 30 September, while preparing for his country’s Nations League meeting with France.

Speaking at Coverciano, with Football Italia among the media present, Scalvini explained that he understood why players seek experience in another country.

“One day I’d like to do that to learn new things and new concepts, but I’m already doing it at Atalanta,” he said.

The 22-year-old also explained that feeling settled at the Italian club had influenced his decision to extend his stay.

Giorgio Scalvini comments add context to Newcastle links

His remarks follow confirmation of Scalvini’s new Atalanta contract, which came after summer reports linking him with Newcastle.

There are two separate questions for supporters following the story: whether the defender would consider moving overseas, and whether Newcastle are actively trying to sign him.

His comments address the first. They offer no confirmation of a renewed Newcastle approach, negotiations or an intended departure date.

The contract extension also remains significant. It strengthens Atalanta’s negotiating position should an interested club pursue a deal.

For Newcastle, the next meaningful development would be evidence of fresh contact or a change in Atalanta’s stance. Scalvini has expressed a longer-term ambition, while making clear that he still values his development in Bergamo.
