Newcastle United have had their hopes of securing a place in the Champions League next season boosted by an official UEFA statement on Friday.

The Magpies made it to the last 16 of the competition this term before being dumped out by Barcelona. Eddie Howe’s side had held the Catalan giants to a 1-1 draw at St James’ Park but then collapsed at the Camp Nou, being defeated 7-2.

Newcastle United must now turn around their Premier League form to climb up the table from 12th and into the Champions League qualifying spots, in order to return to the competition for the 2026/27 campaign.

UEFA confirm extra Premier League spot for Champions League

UEFA have now confirmed that the Premier League will see five teams entered into the Champions League next season, opening up an extra spot for Howe’s side to try and claim.

The news had been widely reported earlier this week after Arsenal beat Sporting Lisbon 1-0 in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final. UEFA has now backed that up with confirmation.

UEFA award an additional qualifying place for the Champions League to the two divisions with the best overall performance across the three European competitions. The Premier League has been a clear frontrunner this season with all nine clubs reaching the last 16.

In the Champions League, Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle United all progressed. In the Europa League, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa are in the knockout rounds. Crystal Palace are still in the Europa Conference League.

UEFA said: “England have now confirmed their place in the top two of the 2025/26 association club coefficients and have earned one of the European Performance Spots.

“Spain, Germany, Portugal and Italy have the next highest coefficients and one of them will take the second European Performance Spot.”

Newcastle United target Champions League qualification

Fifth spot in the Premier League is now guaranteed Champions League football. Currently, that would be awarded to Liverpool.

The Reds are on 49 points, five points behind Aston Villa in fourth place. The Magpies are seven places and seven points behind Liverpool.

Spain are currently favourites to take the second extra Champions League place, ahead of Germany and Portugal. However, the Bundesliga could claim the spot after Bayern Munich won 2-1 over Real Madrid with Celta Vigo facing Freiburg in the Europa League.

There are added complications which could see seventh place be enough for Champions League qualification. In that case, two of the top six Premier League teams winning the Champions League and Europa League would open the seventh place spot.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe was asked about his priorities for the remainder of the campaign in a press conference on Friday, ahead of facing Crystal Palace.

He said: “I’m not sure the pressure necessarily can increase, I think we’re under pressure regardless to perform, to win. I don’t think it’s healthy to heap more pressure on the players, they just have to play free.

“But of course, they know they are under pressure to perform and to win and I‘m under pressure to get results, so I think it’s unhealthy to look at it that way.

“For me, we’ve just got to try to focus on being at our best against Crystal Palace and then the next game, the next game… Of course, we know the long-term target is Europe and there are financial implications if we don’t hit that.”
