Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall earned praise for his performance as England thrashed Croatia 7-0 in the Nations League on Saturday.
The left-back kept his starting place despite Thomas Tuchel making five changes from the side that beat Czechia earlier this week.
Express Sport’s player ratings, published by AOL, awarded Hall seven out of 10 and described him as “A constant threat on the left flank”.
The assessment also praised his defensive work when called upon, offering another encouraging verdict on the Newcastle defender’s international progress.
Lewis Hall builds his England case
Hall started alongside Marc Guéhi, Ezri Konsa and Jarell Quansah in England’s back four, with Anthony Gordon ahead of him on the left.
According to England’s official match report, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka scored twice apiece. Jude Bellingham, Gordon and substitute Morgan Rogers completed the scoring in Rijeka.
For Newcastle supporters, Hall retaining his place through Tuchel’s changes is an encouraging detail alongside the favourable review.
Alan Shearer had already backed Hall to make England’s left-back position his own. Saturday provided another opportunity to strengthen that argument.
One comfortable victory cannot settle the selection debate, and tougher defensive examinations will follow. However, consecutive starts against Czechia and Croatia give Hall something useful to build on as he seeks a regular role under Tuchel.
