Newcastle United reportedly have no plans to sell Joelinton in January as Matthias Jaissle prepares to restore the midfielder to a prominent role.
The Brazilian has yet to make a competitive appearance under Jaissle after a muscle injury disrupted his pre-season, but he is closing in on a return following the international break.
Read Newcastle recently reported that Joelinton is targeting the Premier League trip to Coventry City for his comeback.
His return could also settle some of the uncertainty surrounding his longer-term future at St James’ Park.
Newcastle plan important Joelinton role
According to Football Insider, Newcastle are not planning to make Joelinton available during the January transfer window despite previous speculation over a possible departure.
The report adds that Jaissle intends to use the 30-year-old regularly once he returns to full fitness.
That would make sense given the amount of experience Newcastle lost from midfield during the summer.
Joelinton was also named vice-captain following Jaissle’s arrival and forms part of the club’s new five-man leadership group alongside Dan Burn, Malick Thiaw, Yoane Wissa and Lewis Miley.
His importance therefore extends beyond simply competing for a place in midfield.
Joelinton was linked with a move away during the summer, but an injury prevented him from playing any competitive football during the opening weeks of Jaissle’s tenure.
There is no indication that Newcastle have formally opened talks over his future, and the latest report should be treated as the club’s current stance rather than confirmation of any long-term agreement.
For now, the priority is getting Joelinton back on the pitch.
If he is available at Coventry on 12 October, Jaissle will finally have the opportunity to integrate one of Newcastle’s most experienced players into the side he has begun building.
