Newcastle United could see Dan Burn, Joe Willock and six others leave on free transfers in 2027
  • Newcastle United stars set to leave club in 2027
  • Dan Burn and Joe Willock out of contract
  • What should Magpies do with eight first team stars?

Newcastle United remain focused on the summer transfer window with Ewen Jaouen on the verge of arriving from Ligue 2 side Reims this week, but must also keep an eye on what could happen in 12 months.

The Magpies have already cashed in on Anthony Gordon following the end of the 2025/26 campaign, shaking hands on a £70 million deal with La Liga giants FC Barcelona.

Other big decisions have been made too. Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth left the club following the expiry of their contracts, while Fabian Schar was handed an extension to keep him at St James’ Park for another season.

There will be plenty more drama between now and the start of the 2026/27 season, but what Newcastle will also be doing is thinking ahead to next summer.

ReadNewcastle looks at the eight players out of contract next June. The Magpies must weigh up whether to plan new contract offers, look to cash in on the stars now, or accept watching them walk out of the St James’ Park door without a fee in 2027.

Newcastle United contracts expiring in 2027

Joe Willock

Joe Willock signed a six-year deal with Newcastle United when arriving from Arsenal in August 2021. The club paid a reported £20 million to sign the midfielder from the Gunners.

Willock has gone on to make 182 appearances for the club, but was not a consistent starter at the end of last season. Fulham have been linked with a transfer move.

Verdict – Sell

Jacob Murphy

Jacob Murphy agreed an improved contract with Newcastle following the 2024/25 campaign, but that did not include an extension. That means his deal is set to expire in 2027.

Murphy largely underwhelmed last season but hasn’t seen his name bandied about in transfer rumours like his teammates. At 31 years old, it’s fair to say the midfielder is past his prime, but can clearly be a big character in the side.

Verdict – Reconsider in January

Nick Pope

Newcastle United triggered a one-year extension in the contract of Nick Pope last season, meaning that he would not leave as a free agent this summer, and is on the books for another 12 months.

Even if Jaouen is not viewed as an immediate first choice, the feeling is that Pope’s best days in the black and white are behind him – Ipswich Town and Leeds United are linked with a move.

Verdict – Sell

Dan Burn

Dan Burn signed a new contract with the club in May 2025, extending his deal to last until 2027. The versatile defender is already 34 years old but still a consistent performer, earning a call-up to represent England at the World Cup. But how will he be playing at the age of 35?

Verdict – Reconsider in January

Fabian Schar

Fabian Schar signed a new one-year deal at St James’ Park earlier this month, despite not playing for the team since January due to an ankle injury.

The Magpies clearly don’t plan to sell Schar this summer and another extension next summer would surely only come should he manage an injury-free campaign.

Verdict – Release in 2027

Harrison Ashby

Harrison Ashby is on the books at St James’ Park until 2027 but is unlikely to make another appearance for the first team. The former West Ham man has been shipped off on loan to Swansea City, QPR and Bradford City in recent seasons.

The 24-year-old can do a decent job for an EFL side and, given his contract status, a permanent transfer exit must be the priority over another loan this summer.

Verdict – Sell

Joe White

Joe White was sent on loan to Bradford City alongside Magpies teammate Ashby in January. The 23-year-old last signed a new contract with Newcastle in 2024.

White has only ever made four appearances for the first team and, while it will be sad to see an academy product leave, the midfielder is already 23 years old and deserves a fresh start elsewhere.

Verdict – Sell

Mark Gillespie

Veteran Mark Gillespie was retained for another season following the 2025/26 campaign. The 34-year-old didn’t play a single minute of football last season, not even making the bench once.

Nonetheless, he is clearly a very valued member of the squad and an important presence on the training ground.

Verdict – Release in 2027
