After releasing Andy Carroll and Yoshinori Muto on a free transfer, Newcastle United could benefit from bringing in another centre-forward this summer. ESPN say the Magpies are closing in on Santiago Muñoz from Santos Laguna and supporters on social media couldn’t help but make the same joke.
The 2005 football movie Goal! featured a protagonist called Santiago Munez who came from humble beginnings to play for Newcastle. Muñoz is a real player while Munez was the fictional character, but people couldn’t help point out that the names are very similar.
Even ESPN’s story about the transfer mentioned the movie character too. As for Muñoz, the 19-year-old is an American-born Mexican striker who’s scored three goals and made three assists in 19 games at senior level.
The report says Muñoz’s existing deal at the Estadio Corona was up in 2022 and he’s opted against extending his contract beyond next year, so the only solution for Santos Laguna was to cash in early rather than risk losing him for nothing.
Their loss may be Newcastle’s gain.
