Newcastle’s Sean Steur targets another Netherlands U21 start with play-off hopes alive

Newcastle United midfielder Sean Steur will hope to keep his Netherlands Under-21 place when they face Bosnia and Herzegovina in their final European Championship group qualifier on Tuesday.

The 18-year-old completed his first start at that level in Friday’s 4-2 comeback victory over Slovenia, helping Michael Reiziger’s side maintain their hopes of reaching the play-offs.

Tuesday’s match kicks off at 5.45pm BST at De Vijverberg in Doetinchem, with Steur’s selection yet to be confirmed.

Sean Steur looks to build on first Netherlands U21 start

Steur has already taken two significant steps during his first camp with the Under-21s.

He made his debut as an 83rd-minute substitute in September’s goalless draw against Norway before playing the full match against Slovenia.

Newcastle’s official international roundup confirms the Dutch still need a positive result against Bosnia and Herzegovina to keep their play-off hopes alive.

For Steur, another appearance would offer further competitive experience before his attention returns to club football.

His progress also follows Matthias Jaissle’s praise for his maturity and confidence during a recent supporters’ Q&A.

Those comments came before the Slovenia match, so they should not be read as a reaction to his international performance.

The immediate question is whether Reiziger trusts Steur with another starting role after Friday’s win.

For Newcastle supporters following his development, that selection decision will provide a clearer indication of his standing within the Dutch squad than the call-up alone.
