Newcastle United winger Kyran Thompson features in the Guardian’s 2026 Next Generation selection.
The 17-year-old has already reached Newcastle’s senior matchday squad since arriving from Arsenal in August, earning a place on the bench against Hull City last month.
His inclusion in the Guardian’s annual selection follows a first professional contract and an encouraging start to Under-21 football on Tyneside.
Kyran Thompson is making progress at Newcastle
Thompson signed professional terms on his 17th birthday, 6 September, after moving north from Arsenal’s academy.
He had previously developed at West Ham before joining the Gunners ahead of the 2024/25 season.
The teenager arrived with experience of Premier League 2 and UEFA Youth League football, but Newcastle offered a route he wanted to pursue.
Speaking to Newcastle’s official website when signing his contract, Thompson said: “I’m a technical player who likes to create chances and score goals for the team.”
He also identified Under-21 matches and opportunities to train with the first team as important reasons for joining.
Thompson subsequently scored on his first Newcastle Under-21 start in the 3-1 victory at York City, before making the senior bench against Hull.
That sequence gives supporters tangible progress to follow beyond the latest recognition.
Our analysis of Newcastle’s four England Under-18 prospects explores the opportunities ahead for Thompson and his academy team-mates.
His next challenge is to build consistency through competitive minutes while continuing to push towards a senior debut.
