Newcastle United have made quite a few signings so far this summer, although there are doubts as to how much of an impact they will have on the team. Ewen Jaouen, Bazoumana Toure, Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba have been brought in.
None of them is older than 20 years of age. So, the pivot in the project is quite clear. The Magpies have gone from trying to build a winning team to a sustainable one.
That is not news that the fans will welcome with open arms. But that might just be the financial reality of the club at this point in time.
The ceiling might have shifted from constantly finishing in the top six to building a project like Brighton & Hove Albion or Bournemouth. And another piece has been added to that vision with their latest addition.
Fabrizio Romano confirms another Newcastle United signing
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Newcastle United have completed the Kyle Healy deal for the Academy. The fullback joins from West Ham.
The youngster is still just 16 years of age and plays as a right-back. So, do not expect him to be involved in first-team action anytime soon. This is very much an addition for the future.
He is someone who will add to the club’s academy ranks and will hopefully make it up the ladder over the years to break into the first-team at some point in the future.
It is worth noting, though, that the 16-year-old was highly rated at West Ham United. That is why he made six appearances in the U18 Premier League last season.
Newcastle need more experience
For some reason, the Magpies have seemingly completely overlooked the need for experience this summer. The oldest player they have signed is 20.
From the names that are being linked with them at the moment, it does not feel like the strategy is bound to change. Even if Bruno Guimaraes does end up completing a move away from St James’ Park over the coming weeks, which is starting to feel pretty likely at this point.
A squad full of youngsters cannot compete in the Premier League, though. At least not meaningfully. Just ask Chelsea, who tried to champion a similar strategy for four seasons under BlueCo.
The result was that they failed to qualify for the Champions League three out of four seasons. And now, they are back to a more traditional transfer strategy. Morgan Rogers was signed recently and their next addition is going to be 26-year-old Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix.
