It is safe to say that the noise around the Bruno Guimaraes situation has picked up over the last few days. The Newcastle United midfielder has been on Arsenal’s radar this summer, with Mikel Arteta believed to be a big fan.
Guimaraes has seen teammates like Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak leave over the past twelve months. So, it is only natural for him to consider his future.
Guimaraes showed his quality at the recent World Cup for Brazil. A lot of people will choose to remember the missed penalty kick, but let’s not overlook the four assists that he had at the tournament.
Guimaraes is going to turn 29 this year. He might very well feel that this is his last chance to make a big move away. And it looks like he has already made it clear what he wants this summer, both to Arsenal and Newcastle United.
There is full agreement between Bruno Guimaraes and Arsenal already
Fabrizio Romano said about the situation involving Guimaraes, Arsenal and Newcastle United on his YouTube channel:
“Arsenal have full agreement in place with Bruno Guimaraes on personal terms. So, the contract is ready, the contract is done. Bruno said yes to Arsenal project.
“Bruno wants to be respectful with Newcastle. So, he doesn’t want to break the relationship, but Bruno wants to go. Bruno made clear to Newcastle that he’s decided to go.”
Of course, now, it is about finding an agreement with Newcastle United as well. They won’t want to part ways with Guimaraes for a transfer fee lower than they are happy with.
Having already pocketed close to £170 million on the transfers of Gordon and Tonali this summer, one would hope that Newcastle United do not have any pressing need to bring in more.
So, they have the chance to ensure that even if this move happens, it does so on their terms. Are Arsenal willing to meet those? That remains to be seen.
What do Newcastle United need to do next?
It remains to be seen how things will play out for Guimaraes from here. The most realistic seems to be Arsenal agreeing a deal with Newcastle United.
There have been some rumours about Chelsea also potentially being interested in the player though. They have already beaten Arsenal to the signature of Morgan Rogers. Could they do it again?
If there ends up being a race to sign Guimaraes, it would boost his transfer value and help Newcastle United bring in as big of a fee as possible.
Even then, if you ask me, the best-case scenario would be Guimaraes staying. It might be too big of an ask for one to expect the squad to deliver next season, despite losing their three best players in this window.
