Newcastle United lead race to sign AC Milan player this summer

Just like that, the World Cup has come and gone. Now, fans will start turning their attention back to club football. And for Newcastle United, there is a lot of work to be done.

The Magpies finished 12th last season in the Premier League. Usually, that would be a good time to strengthen the team. But on the contrary, Newcastle United’s squad has been weakened.

Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon have left. Bruno Guimaraes could follow suit in the not-too-distant future. The likes of Lewis Hall and Nick Pope are being linked with moves away as well.

The situation is far from ideal. But there is some positive news. It looks like Newcastle United have emerged as frontrunners to sign an AC Milan centre-back.

Newcastle United favourites in race for AC Milan centre-back

According to Football Insider, Newcastle United are currently leading the race to sign AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori this summer.

Tomori has spent the past five-plus years in a prominent role at AC Milan. He has made 214 appearances for the Italian giants. But it is expected that the Englishman will be on the move this summer.

Well, Newcastle United could certainly do with someone of Tomori’s quality and experience. Let’s see what the future holds for the centre-back.

It is worth pointing out that there is only a year left on his contract with AC Milan. So, he could be available for a bargain transfer fee, which makes things easier for Newcastle United.

Fikayo Tomori could be a very good signing for Newcastle

Of course, any move for Tomori would depend on the competition. We have seen Newcastle United come up short on more than one occasion, when having to compete with others in a transfer race.

They fell short when they tried to sign Victor Munoz. A deal had seemed as good as done but it fell apart when Liverpool made their move for the Spanish winger.

Something similar happened when it came to Johan Manzambi. The Swiss midfielder has joined Aston Villa, even though Newcastle United had agreed a fee before them.

So, Newcastle United fans will be wary about getting too excited about the links with Tomori. Things do seem positive at the moment though.
