Jamie Carragher fears long season for Newcastle United after Everton defeat

Jamie Carragher has warned that Newcastle United could face a long and difficult season after their 1-0 defeat to Everton left them just four points above the Premier League relegation zone.

Thierno Barry scored the only goal of the game at St James’ Park, handing Everton their first away victory in the Premier League this season and leaving Newcastle United down in 13th place.

Matthias Jaissle’s side have struggled this season and their home form has become a big concern. The Magpies have lost four of their last five matches in all competitions and now face a difficult trip to Fulham on Saturday.

Carragher raises concerns over Newcastle performances

Speaking after the defeat on Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher admitted he was worried about the direction Newcastle were heading under Matthias Jaissle and believes the coming weeks could be difficult for the club.

“I think it is going to be a tough season for them,” said Carragher. “I felt tonight [Monday] was actually more important for Newcastle than the cup game [Carabao Cup loss at Everton last week], and it was the other way round for Everton, who are desperate for a trophy.

“But I fear a little bit for Newcastle, I think it could be a long, tough season.”

Newcastle’s home record has been particularly disappointing. No Premier League side has lost more home games in 2026 than the Magpies (7), while they have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 14 league matches at St James’ Park.

Carragher was also unimpressed with the football Newcastle United have been producing under their new manager.

“Watching them of late, especially at home, it feels flat and a little bit boring, and that was one thing I didn’t think I’d ever be describing Jaissle’s Newcastle as.”

“At times, those types of teams and managers can leave themselves open at the back, but it’s front-footed, it’s aggressive, it’s getting the crowd involved, and we’ve just never seen any of that at all tonight. I’m a little bit flummoxed watching it.”

Newcastle face difficult test against Fulham

Carragher also pointed towards Newcastle’s upcoming fixtures and warned that the club could struggle if their performances do not improve.

He admitted he had initially been impressed by Jaissle and his early impressions of the manager, but believes the performances have raised questions despite some encouraging results.

With several young players in the squad and a relatively young manager in charge, Carragher believes expectations at St James’ Park could become difficult to manage.

Newcastle now have little time to put the Everton defeat behind them, with Saturday’s trip to Fulham presenting another important test for Jaissle and his players.
