Newcastle United have high hopes for teenage forward Alfie Seldon after his impressive start at academy level.
Under-21s lead coach Robbie Stockdale is full of praise for the youngster’s intelligence and hopes for him to have a great future at Newcastle.
The 17-year-old signed his first professional contract at St James’ Park during the summer before impressing for the Under-21s during their pre-season campaign.
Alfie Seldon has also made a strong start to the current season, scoring five goals and providing two assists in his first six appearances in the Under-18s Premier League.
He has since taken another step forward after scoring his first Under-21s goal in the National League Cup earlier this month.
Stockdale explains why Newcastle rate Alfie Seldon
Speaking about the young forward to The Gazette, Stockdale revealed that Newcastle United have high expectations for the teenager and highlighted his ability to play across the front three positions.
“Alfie is another young player we have high hopes for. He can play anywhere across the front three positions, he’s a really intelligent player, makes really good decisions on the pitch.
“The fact we are prepared to play them in the Under-21s at such a young age shows we think a lot of them. Again, his position on the pitch has a lot of competition but we’ve not shied away from playing him at Bradford City and places like that so if they are good enough and they warrant a place in the team, I’ll play them, I don’t care what age they are,” Stockdale said.
Newcastle continue to trust young academy players
Newcastle United has a rich history of big names coming from the academy. The recent rise of Lewis Miley is a prime example for young Academy players to look up to.
The midfielder made history as the club’s youngest-ever Premier League and Champions League appearance-maker and goalscorer. He signed a long-term contract extension through 2032 and remains a key part of the first-team squad.
Seldon’s involvement with the Under-21s at just 17 shows the trust Newcastle have in his development. Despite facing competition for places across the forward line, Stockdale has made it clear that age will not prevent young players from earning opportunities.
