Newcastle United has endured a difficult start under Matthias Jaissle after he took over the job in the summer.
Newcastle United sit on 12th in the Premier League table and face Everton next. The Magpies have already been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Everton.
Former Newcastle United midfielder Lee Clark believes the club’s new project under Matthias Jaissle will take time. He warned that the shift towards developing young players could prove difficult in the Premier League in a short time.
Newcastle have taken a different approach under Matthias Jaissle, who previously worked with Red Bull Salzburg in Austria and Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli.
The 38-year-old manager has a background in developing young players, and Clark believes that was a major reason behind his appointment as the club look to build a squad with younger talent.
Speaking on Keys & Gray Unleashed, Clark suggested Newcastle have moved away from their previous approach of signing more established players.
Newcastle’s change in direction under Matthias Jaissle
“Our new manager has a history of player development in the Red Bull organisation in the Austrian Bundesliga at Salzburg and then in the Saudi Pro League,” Clark said.
“I think that was his remit.
“I think that was the reason Eddie wanted to come out of it because he wanted to carry on with going for trying to get the next level of player.
“The club have changed their ambitions and wanted to go down the untried, the youngsters and developing them and possibly selling them on for big money like we have in the past.”
Newcastle’s young players need time to adapt
Clark believes Newcastle’s decision to rely on younger players will require patience, particularly with several of them having little or no Premier League experience.
He pointed out that the Premier League presents a different challenge compared to other competitions.
“That is going to take time, especially when most of those players have no Premier League experience.
“It’s completely different to any other league in the world and to throw seven or eight youngsters in there, untried and untested Premier League players, was always going to be a difficult ask.”
Despite Newcastle United’s approach to build a team around young players, they need results. Premier League is a difficult league and requires results to come by as the club balances long term recruitment with immediate results.
