Newcastle United supporters have made their feelings about Sean Steur’s limited involvement clear, with the midfielder receiving an unexpected reception during Thursday’s defeat at Everton.
The Dutchman was brought on in the 81st minute of Newcastle’s 3-1 defeat in the Carabao Cup. However, by this point the visitors were already trailing 3-0 and were looking likely to be knocked out.
However, it led to one of the loudest responses from the away fans. It seems as if supporters are frustrated they are not seeing enough of the summer signing.
Steur has failed to make the most of his move from Ajax to Newcastle. He arrived for a fee of €23.5 million with possible add-ons making it rise to €27 million.
The situation has become a growing issue for the Magpies as they try to turn their fortunes around.
Supporters make their feelings about Steur clear
His last appearance was during Newcastle’s 2-1 win over Hull City on 19 September. Since then he has been used very little, only playing late in games from the bench.
He has sat on the bench for the whole of several games. This has been rather frustrating for fans, as they had expected him to play a more prominent role after his arrival.
The amount of interest he has is clear to see after his reception at Everton. Newcastle were losing heavily. There was a lot of noise from the away fans when he came on.
The positive reaction had a hint of satire. The supporters were frustrated watching their team lose. Steur’s late introduction meant the chances he had received earlier in the game were few and far between.
Newcastle were handed a late consolation goal from Dan Burn.
Jaissle continues to favour Nico González
It seems as though Steur is not getting much of a chance due to Jaissle favouring Nico González in midfield.
The Newcastle boss has spoken about wanting to play González, who has made it difficult for the former Ajax star to get much game time.
This decision is likely to come under further scrutiny due to the loss to Everton. Newcastle have paid a lot of money for Steur, and he hasn’t had the chance to show what he can do.
This is creating questions around Jaissle’s tactics in the midfield. Newcastle have failed to find any form recently; many will believe changes need to be made.
Despite Steur not being guaranteed a place in the starting eleven, it does give an indication of how the fans feel about him as a player that has not started much so far.
Newcastle’s defensive problems add to the frustration
Jaissle is facing other issues apart from the lack of Steur’s participation in the game. He is also worried about Newcastle’s away performances recently. In their last four matches they had a very poor record, having conceded a total of 11 goals.
They were also disappointed in their match against Everton, losing 3-0 and being eliminated from the Carabao Cup.
The reaction was just as harsh at full-time, with loud boos from the travelling fans.
With their next match against Everton in the Premier League on Monday, Newcastle won’t have long to get over the disappointment, and Jaissle will get a quick chance to respond.
Steur will likely be named on the bench again but could have his case for a more senior role strengthened after his reception on Thursday.
Jaissle has a lot of work to do. He needs to regain fan trust, help improve Newcastle’s defensive record and show that his decisions are helping the club move forwards.
