- Newcastle United and Brighton to battle it out for Robin Risser
- Risser high on Newcastle shortlist to replace Nick Pope
- Why Risser is a more attractive option than Trafford & de Gea
Newcastle United are set for a summer battle with Brighton for highly rated Lens goalkeeper Robin Risser, according to reports.
The goalkeeping position is expected to be a major focus for the Magpies this summer, with Aaron Ramsdale’s loan expiring and Nick Pope struggling for form.
There are several options on the shortlist, including long-term target James Trafford. However, Risser is believed to be a leading candidate to become Newcastle’s new number one.
Robin Risser set for Premier League move
The France U21 international has been in impressive form in Ligue 1 this season, with Lens emerging as surprise title contenders. The goalkeeper has featured in 31 league games, conceding just 31 goals while keeping 10 clean sheets.
His performances have attracted interest from across Europe, including several Premier League clubs.
Brighton are among the clubs reportedly considering a move for the 21-year-old amid uncertainty surrounding the future of Bart Verbruggen, who has also been linked with Newcastle.
Reports suggest Lens would demand a significant fee for the goalkeeper, with figures of around £35 million mentioned. While that may seem expensive, Risser’s age profile means the position could be secured for the next decade for whichever club signs him.
Newcastle United need Risser
As mentioned, it has been a difficult season for Newcastle’s goalkeepers. A number of costly mistakes from those between the sticks have repeatedly hurt the Magpies.
While Risser may not be the marquee option compared to names like Trafford or even the linked David de Gea, he could prove to be the smartest long-term solution.
The Frenchman would likely arrive with the ability to challenge — and potentially overtake — the declining Nick Pope almost immediately.
Most excitingly for Newcastle supporters, Risser would represent a significant upgrade with the ball at his feet. The 21-year-old ranks in the top 78th percentile among European goalkeepers for accurate long balls.
He is also known for his sharp reflexes and quick movement across his line, both of which would offer a clear improvement on some of Pope’s current weaknesses.
