It would be safe to say that Newcastle United have had a tough time when it comes to convincing players to join the club this summer. Victor Munoz picked a move to Anfield over St James’ Park. And even though the Magpies had agreed a deal with SC Freiburg, Johan Manzambi chose to sign with Aston Villa.
So, the key for Newcastle United is to try and recruit players who are willing to come to Newcastle United. Otherwise, one cannot help but feel that a lot of it has been a waste of time so far.
Midfield is one area where Newcastle United will definitely need to strengthen this summer. I have already talked about the Manzambi deal that collapsed. But on the other hand, it looks like Arsenal are also now starting to push to try and get a deal done for Bruno Guimaraes.
If that happens, and there is a good chance it will, it would further weaken a midfield that has already seen Sandro Tonali leave in this summer window. On the other hand, it does look like one of their transfer targets is open to joining Newcastle United, but it is not his first preference.
Midfielder open to Newcastle United moe but prefers Nottingham Forest
The player we are talking about is none other than Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall. He has already been on the receiving end of interest from Newcastle United.
On the other hand, Nottingham Forest want him as well. And it has been suggested that while he would be open to both, the latter would be his preference
According to Football FanCast, while speaking on his YouTube channel, journalist Alasdair Gold said:
“Forest is his preference because he would get more game time there, but I’m sure he would also jump at the chance to play for Newcastle.”
It remains to be seen if Newcastle United do end up making a push to sign Bergvall. If they do, it could take a transfer fee in the region of £50 million to get a deal done.
Would Bergvall be the right signing?
First of all, let us just look at the pros of signing Bergvall. Even though he is 20 years of age, he has a decent bit of experience in the Premier League.
If Newcastle United do end up signing him, there is a good chance that he would be a consistent starter. At the very least, he would get a decent bit of playing time.
That being said, is he someone who would be capable of taking the place of someone like Tonali or Guimaraes in the squad? To be very honest, I do not think so.
It would be a lot safer on the part of Newcastle United, if they end up signing a midfielder who is entering his prime on the pitch and would be ready to come into the team and replace key players like Tonali and Guimaraes as soon as possible, not three or four years down the line.
