Newcastle United have seen a couple of their moves get hijacked this summer. It had looked like they were going to sign Victor Munoz before Liverpool swooped in late and got a deal done. The same thing happened with Johan Manzambi and Aston Villa more recently.
Now though, it looks like Newcastle United might be trying to hijack a transfer move themselves. And it is for a 25-year-old English goalkeeper.
It is no secret that Newcastle United could do with another option between the posts. Nick Pope could be about to leave this summer, with Ipswich Town believed to be interested.
On the other hand, it appears that Newcastle United are trying to move ahead of another Premier League newcomer, Coventry City, and sign a goalkeeper they have been trying to.
Newcastle United plotting move for English goalkeeper
According to a report from Football Insider, Newcastle United are plotting a move to sign Carl Rushworth after Coventry City saw an opening bid rejected by Brighton & Hove Albion.
The further goes to state that Coventry City have been keen to bring Rushworth back but with no agreement between the clubs, Newcastle United are now preparing to hijack the move.
It is worth pointing out that Rushworth spent the previous season on loan at Coventry City. And he was their starting goalkeeper as they earned promotion to the Premier League.
So, it is not hard to understand why Frank Lampard might be keen to maintain that continuity between the posts, especially after the impressive numbers he put up in the Championship. But his form has caught the eye of the Magpies as well.
Who could be Newcastle’s next goalkeeper?
It does not appear that Rushworth has a long-term future at Brighton & Hove Albion. And after spending so many seasons out on loan, it might be time for the 25-year-old to find himself a permanent home.
Could that be Newcastle United? Coventry City? Or somewhere else? Time shall tell. Of course, it is also worth noting that Rushworth is not the only goalkeeper the club have been linked with.
James Trafford of Manchester City is believed to be on their radar as well. He is expected to be on the move this summer after spending the previous season as Gianluigi Donnarumma’s backup.
When Trafford did play, he produced results. He was the domestic cup goalkeeper for Man City and they won both the League Cup and the FA Cup.
