Newcastle win sixth FA Cup after beating Man City on this day in 1955

On this day (May 7) in 1955, Newcastle United won the FA Cup after beating Manchester City. The Magpies beat the Sky Blues 3-1 in front of 100,000 supporters at Wembley.

From David Potter’s ‘Newcastle United On This Day – History, Facts & Figures from Every Day of the Year’

Doug Livingston started Ronnie Simpson, Bobby Cowell, Ron Batty, Bob Stokoe, Tom Casey, Jimmy Scoular, Bobby Mitchell, Vic Keeble, Jackie Milburn, Len White and George Hannah against City and saw his side get off the mark in the first minute.

Newcastle took the lead after 45 seconds through a brilliant Milburn header from a corner. Bobby Johnstone equalised for City before half-time, but United regained their lead after the break through Mitchell. He fired home from close range after a cross wasn’t cleared.

Newcastle then doubled their lead before the half mark through Hannah. He fired home inside the box after the Sky Blues once again failed to clear their lines and United celebrated their sixth triumph in the competition.

Newcastle wouldn’t win the FA Cup again and only managed runners-up medals in 1974, 1998 and 1999.
