Newcastle United U21s reached the Jersey Mike’s Trophy knockout stages for the first time since 2018/19. They secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Rotherham United.

Kyran Thompson netted the winning goal at the AESSEAL New York Stadium on Tuesday night. Taking the young Magpies to five consecutive victories in all competitions.

The result ensures Newcastle have moved through Northern Group C after a tough campaign. One that saw them play three top-flight Football League oppositions. It was also a major achievement for the academy. They haven’t made it this far in the competition in the last 8 years.

Robbie Stockdale’s side had to work hard for their qualification, with Rotherham providing a difficult test on home soil.

Dowell keeps Newcastle in the contest

The League Two hosts started positively and forced Newcastle goalkeeper Roman Dowell into two important first-half saves.

The 16-year-old first denied Kian Spence with a strong stop from the edge of the penalty area. He then reacted well to keep out a powerful effort from Klaidi Lolos.

Newcastle gradually found their rhythm and threatened through Vakhtang Salia. The forward spotted Rotherham goalkeeper Ted Cann off his line but could not find the target with an ambitious attempt from distance.

Miodrag Pivaš saw a header from Thompson’s free kick go wide for the visitors, but Newcastle continued to pile on the pressure. The visitors’ attacking play was rewarded in the 34th minute.

Thompson delivers the decisive moment

Newcastle were quick to apply pressure after winning the ball back. A nice move between Alfie Seldon and Salia opened up some space, and Thompson took it upon himself to score the opener. The young striker showed his quality again by calmly chipping the ball over Cann to score. He has now scored in his last four Under-21 starts.

Newcastle almost extended their lead before the break when Thompson met a Dylan Charlton cross but fired straight at Cann.

The forward continued to cause problems after the break, as Cann made a great stop to deny him a curling free kick before punching another strong shot away.

Rotherham struggled to get through Newcastle’s tight defence in the second half.

Charlton was presented with an opportunity to score from the byline after a dangerous cross from Matheos Ferreira but fired wide as he was cleared by Sonny Aljofree.

Dowell did not get another shot on target after the break as Newcastle held on to their advantage.

Newcastle Academy celebrates significant progress

The final whistle brought more than just another victory for Stockdale’s side.

Newcastle’s academy have not reached the knockout stages of the competition since 2018/19, and their return offers a valuable chance to test themselves against senior opposition.

A narrow 3-1 win over York City was followed by a 2-1 defeat against Bradford City in Northern Group C, meaning the game against Rotherham was vital.

The Jersey Mike’s Trophy presents another challenge for academy sides as they take on League One and League Two clubs. Rotherham won this competition in 2022.

The two wins against senior opposition has been invaluable for Newcastle as they have gained some good momentum, winning five games in a row across all competitions after a tough start.

They could still top Northern Group C depending on Bradford’s result against York next week, but qualification is already secured. The young Magpies can now look forward to the Round of 32 and another chance to show their progress.
