However, Burn was frustrated by the lack of points following his goal. He felt that Newcastle had played well for long periods of the game but just failed to take their chances.

Burn highlights Newcastle’s costly mistakes

Burn was quick to point out that Newcastle struggled to create clear chances. That they made mistakes in defence that led to Everton scoring.

He said he felt they didn’t do enough going forward and was frustrated by the defensive errors. He was particularly disappointed to concede after taking control of the second half.

Burn also admitted there were concerns over the consistency of Newcastle on the road. He added that they didn’t play well at either end of the park. It was an obvious reason why fans would be disappointed.

Monday offers Newcastle a chance to respond

Burn wants Newcastle to bounce back in their next game.

The defender said he felt the squad could take positives from their display against Crystal Palace. Had they played like that against Everton, they could have got a different result.

However, Newcastle need to improve their decision-making in key moments. Burn stressed that effort has not been the problem, but the team must become more effective when attacking and defending.

Their focus will now be on Monday’s game, and Burn made it clear that whilst they are disappointed. They need to use that to drive them to a better performance.

Burn insists Newcastle have the quality to turn things around

Although it is a disappointing result to go out of the cup, Burn’s comments suggest the players will be looking to improve. Newcastle showed they can compete with Everton; however, they failed to take their chances.

The defensive focus is on learning from their mistakes. Eddie Howe’s side needs to be more consistent when playing away from home and more composed in both penalty boxes.

They get the chance to prove they have taken these lessons on board in Monday’s fixture.
