Crystal Palace v Newcastle United match report: Newcastle United claimed all three points from their South London opponents. A brutal second-half performance saw them beat Crystal Palace 2-0 at Selhurst Park.
A William Osula goal followed by a Harvey Barnes strike either side of the hour mark saw Matthias Jaissle’s Magpies turn a scoreless first half into a statement Premier League victory. The home fans were left booing by the final whistle.
A Tight First Half at Selhurst Park
Jaissle made five changes for the trip. He handed starts to captain Dan Burn, Fabian Schär, Amar Dedić, Jacob Murphy and Osula. The opening 45 minutes were more about nerve than flair. Palace had the better chances and could have taken control of the game.
However, they were met with a tight Newcastle backline, and Axel Disasi thwarted Osula early on with a block. Barnes had a couple of shots that were charged down.
Two yellows were shown before half-time to show how tense the visitors were. It was goalless at the break with Palace looking more likely to win the game.
Osula and Barnes Turn the Match in Eleven Minutes
Everything changed just over a minute after the restart. Murphy whipped in a superb cross from the right and Osula, starting for the first time since the opening day of the season, stabbed home between Disasi and Chris Richards in the 47th minute. It was poor Palace defending, but Newcastle were in no mood to apologise.
Eleven minutes later the Magpies doubled their lead. Nico González found Dedić, who delivered a perfectly weighted cutback, and Barnes swept it home for his fourth goal of the season. Palace started the second half badly, and Sky Sports reporter Ron Walker described the home side’s start as dreadful, while Newcastle played like a side possessed. The Selhurst crowd booed, and the visitors kept attacking with pace and confidence.
Newcastle were playing like they were on fire. They are playing some blistering, clinical and confident Premier League football,” said Sky Sports reporter Ron Walker.
Late Pressure, Final Whistle and What Comes Next
Palace tried to rally late on as substitute Dario Osorio struck a powerful shot from outside the penalty area in the 71st minute forcing Lukáš Horníček into a smart save. Osorio then went close twice late on but hit the crossbar both times.
However, the game saw tempers flare with Yeremy Pino booked for fouling Osula. Anan Khalaili was booked, and Jaydee Canvot received a late yellow card after taking down Yoane Wissa just past halfway.
Newcastle freshened things up in the 77th minute. Anthony Elanga returned from injury in place of Barnes, while Wissa and Jacob Ramsey replaced Osula and Joe Willock. Malick Thiaw came on late for Dedić and needed treatment after a knock to the head.
At the other end of the ground, the travelling Toon Army, who made it through a storm to reach Selhurst Park, enjoyed every minute. They sang loudly as the win drew closer.
The statistics show how well Newcastle United performed. Palace had a slight edge on possession (13-11) but only had 3 shots on target. The BBC noted that they were met with boos from the crowd at the final whistle. The pressure is mounting on Palace manager Pierre Sage after another defeat.
Newcastle’s next match sees them host Everton at St James’ Park on Monday 2nd November (8pm). The win at Selhurst Park, thanks to a clinical Osula finish and an excellently scored Barnes goal, will give the Toon Army a lot of confidence.
