Everton 3-1 Newcastle United: Magpies Knocked Out of Carabao Cup

Everton 3-1 Newcastle United: Newcastle United crashed out of the Carabao Cup after suffering a 3-1 defeat against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Newcastle started brightly, but they fell behind when James Garner netted in the 34th minute. They then suffered at the end of the first half as Hayden Hackney made it two for the Toffees, and Thierno Barry scored a third after the break.

A late consolation from Dan Burn was not enough to change the result, as the defeat means the 2025 winners will not be making a return to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

Everton will now travel to League Two Fleetwood Town in the last eight after the lower-league side produced a shock victory over Arsenal earlier in the week.

Newcastle Start Well Before Everton Take Control

Newcastle opened the game brightly with Harvey Barnes and Fabian Schär coming close.

However, Everton slowly started to settle into the game, and James Tarkowski made a vital defensive contribution. He timed his tackle perfectly to stop William Osula from getting a shot away.

That intervention proved important as Everton moved ahead in the 34th minute.

Garner gave David Moyes’ side the lead with a wonderful strike from just outside the penalty spot. The goal turned the game in favour of the hosts.

Newcastle struggled to get back into the game before half-time, and Everton struck just before the break as Hackney scored his first goal for the club.

A summer signing from Middlesbrough for £16 million, the midfielder put Everton in control of the game with a 2-0 lead at the break.

The Toffees did this despite being without Jack Grealish due to a breach of club discipline.

Thierno Barry Seals Everton Victory as Newcastle React Late

Newcastle struggled to get their response going after the break, but Everton kept causing problems.

Barry put the tie to bed in the 69th minute with his 7th goal of the season. He was played in by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and finished coolly to make it 3-0.

The result means Newcastle will have another frustrating evening after only winning two of their last six games across all competitions.

However, Burn finally gave the travelling fans something to cheer about as he headed home late in the 88th minute. The goal came from an assist from Joe Willock but was a little too late to turn the game around.

The celebrations quickly turned into a fiasco as the two teams got into a heated argument. Tarkowski pushed Joelinton to the floor, and several players became involved.

All three players, Tarkowski, Joelinton and Everton’s Pickford, were shown yellow cards for their actions.

Everton were comfortable in the closing stages to earn their spot in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. The Moyes’ men now have the chance to move one step closer to winning their first League Cup.

Newcastle will have to move on swiftly. They face Everton again on Monday in the Premier League.
