Newcastle’s Lewis Miley leaves England squad after training injury

Newcastle United midfielder Lewis Miley has returned from England Under-21 duty after reportedly suffering a knock in training.

The FA confirmed on Thursday that Miley and Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jobe Bellingham had left Lee Carsley’s squad for the remainder of the camp.

Chronicle Live reports that Miley picked up the problem during training. A report carried by AOL says the injury is not thought to be serious or long term, with further assessment to follow.

The 20-year-old was an unused substitute in England’s 4-2 qualifying victory over Kazakhstan last Friday.

He will now miss their remaining European Under-21 Championship qualifiers against Slovakia on Friday 2 October and the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday 6 October.

Everton’s Harrison Armstrong and Liverpool’s Trey Nyoni have joined the squad as replacements.

Lewis Miley injury: Coventry availability remains unconfirmed

Newcastle return to action away at Coventry City on Monday 12 October, with kick-off at 8pm BST.

That leaves 11 days between Thursday’s withdrawal announcement and Newcastle’s next Premier League fixture, but no recovery timetable has been confirmed.

Miley’s withdrawal does not establish that he will miss the Coventry match. His availability will depend on how the problem develops before Matthias Jaissle selects his squad.

The next significant update will be whether he can resume full training. His status will be tracked alongside the club’s other fitness concerns in our Newcastle injury guide.
