Newcastle United midfielder Sean Steur helped spark the Netherlands U21 comeback as they beat Slovenia 4-2 in Friday’s European Championship qualifier.
Steur started for Michael Reiziger’s side and played a part in their response after the hosts took an early lead through David Pejicic.
According to Voetbal International’s match report, the Newcastle midfielder forced a save before Ayoub Oufkir converted the rebound to bring the visitors level.
Lequincio Zeefuik then put the Netherlands ahead before half-time. Slovenia equalised after the interval, but goals from Ernest Poku and Kees Smit secured the victory.
Sean Steur builds on Netherlands U21 breakthrough
The starting opportunity follows Steur’s Netherlands U21 debut against Norway last week, when he came off the bench during a goalless draw.
Reiziger has already praised the qualities behind Steur’s rapid Newcastle breakthrough, with the teenager earning international recognition after entering Matthias Jaissle’s first-team plans.
Friday provided another step: a place in the starting side and involvement in a goal when his team needed a response.
For Newcastle, that is the encouraging detail. Steur is gaining experience of competitive international football, with qualification pressure adding something different to his club development.
The Netherlands face Bosnia and Herzegovina on Tuesday, 6 October. They must win and need Israel to drop points to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Steur therefore has another opportunity to build on his breakthrough before returning to Newcastle.
