Jamaal Lascelles admits Newcastle goodbye regret after 12-year spell

Jamaal Lascelles has revealed he still wants to return to Newcastle United after feeling he never received the opportunity to properly say goodbye to supporters.

The former Magpies captain ended his 12-year association with the club when he joined Leicester City in February, but the January-window departure left little time for a farewell.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Lascelles said he would love to return for a “proper goodbye” and thank the Newcastle supporters who backed him throughout his time on Tyneside.

The 32-year-old is currently a free agent and remains determined to continue his playing career.

Jamaal Lascelles wants Newcastle farewell

Lascelles joined Newcastle from Nottingham Forest in 2014 before spending another season on loan at the City Ground.

He later established himself at St James’ Park and was appointed captain by Rafa Benitez following Newcastle’s relegation in 2016.

Lascelles subsequently led the club to the Championship title and eventually captained Newcastle in the Champions League.

Newcastle’s retrospective on his 12-year spell highlights 253 appearances, including the famous 4-1 Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain.

His Newcastle career finally ended with a permanent move to Leicester, where he signed a short-term deal.

Read Newcastle previously covered the reaction to Lascelles after Leicester’s relegation, with his former captain remaining a popular figure among Magpies supporters.

Lascelles is now waiting for his next opportunity after leaving Leicester and told Sky he has continued working on his fitness.

Whatever comes next, the defender clearly feels there remains one piece of unfinished business at St James’ Park: properly thanking the Newcastle supporters.
