- Newcastle United fans show frenzy of love for Leicester City defender
- Jamaal Lascelles regarded as club hero after12-year stint
- Foxes relegated to League One
Newcastle United supporters have flocked to the defence of former player Jamaal Lascelles after the centre-back suffered back-to-back relegations with Leicester City on Tuesday night.
The defender only arrived at the King Power Stadium at the start of February and joined what was an already sinking ship. The Foxes were slapped with a six-point deduction and that, combined with a torrid Championship season, has seen them condemned to League One football next term.
Lascelles only signed a short-term deal with the club and may not feature in the third tier next term. The defender has made nine league appearances for Leicester City, starting each of the last six.
Ex Newcastle United star relegated with Leicester City
Following a 2-2 draw with Hull City last night, which saw relegation confirmed, Foxes supporters gathered outside the stadium to vent their frustration at players. After Harry Winks was arguing with supporters last week, Lascelles appeared to be the only player willing to have a conversation on Tuesday night.
The player tried to explain to fans that his teammates were ‘trying their best’ and remained calm in the face of fan fury. The video has circulated online and ended up on the timeline of Newcastle supporters.
Magpies fans have rushed to share words of support for the 32-year-old, who once captained Newcastle and helped the team back into the Premier League over a 12-year stay.
Magpies supporters flock to defence of Jamaal Lascelles
One social media user on X wrote: “Fair play Lascelles. Newcastle United don’t miss Lascelles the footballer. However, despite the leadership group, it does feel that there’s a lack of leaders at NUFC presently.”
Another said: “If Leicester make him captain next season they’ll come straight back up. No question about it.”
The clip of Lascelles standing up in the face of adversity has had some Newcastle fans lament a lack of leadership in the current squad under Eddie Howe, with the biggest names linked with moves away.
One Magpies fan wrote: “Proper leader Jamaal Lascelles. We missed this kind of leadership after the latest derby defeat. I’m sure he’ll stay and try to get Leicester back to Championship, that’s the kind of player and person he is.”
Another said: “You can say what you like about Lascelles as a player but just as he was at NUFC he always fronted up from a leadership standpoint.”
