Newcastle United defender Malick Thiaw ended his international programme with a second successive Germany start as Jürgen Klopp’s side drew 0–0 in Greece on Sunday.
Thiaw partnered Waldemar Anton in central defence in Thessaloniki, following his involvement in Thursday’s 2–0 victory over Serbia.
The German Football Association’s match report confirmed another clean sheet, although Germany’s failure to score left them third in their Nations League group.
For Newcastle supporters, the encouraging development is Thiaw’s continued involvement after a significant breakthrough earlier in the week.
Malick Thiaw builds on first competitive Germany start
Thiaw completed the Serbia victory on his first competitive senior start for his country, as Newcastle’s official international update confirmed.
His place against Greece remained a question before Sunday’s team announcement, but Klopp retained the centre-back partnership.
Two consecutive selections give Thiaw something to build on internationally before Newcastle resume their Premier League campaign at Coventry City on Monday 12 October.
Nick Woltemade, meanwhile, began on the bench after starting against Serbia. The Newcastle striker, who is spending the season on loan at Juventus, replaced Jonathan Burkardt in the 63rd minute.
Burkardt had earlier seen a goal disallowed for handball in the build-up, while goalkeeper Jonas Urbig denied Georgios Masouras an early opener.
Germany finished the evening with five points from four matches, three behind both Greece and the Netherlands.
The result frustrated Klopp’s side, but Thiaw leaves the window having turned his starting opportunity against Serbia into a second selection.
