Lewis Hall’s England return and Newcastle dream

Newcastle fans already knew Lewis Hall could do a job for the club. Now Lewis Hall England return proves he can do one for his country too. The story behind it goes back to his childhood on Tyneside.

Hall grew up as a boyhood Newcastle supporter. He pictured himself out on the pitch at St James’ Park. Three years after leaving Chelsea for Tyneside, he has turned that picture into reality. He has a new contract at the club and a regular place in the England squad to show for it.

Lewis Hall: ‘One day that I would play here’

Hall has been open about where this dream started. He told Chronicle Live in the original interview:

“First things first, when I was younger, I had a stadium tour around here.” He also described watching Newcastle long before he imagined wearing the shirt himself:

“I always used to watch the games on television, and genuinely, I always thought one day that I would play here.”

Lewis Hall recently signed a new contract at Newcastle this year. The deal ended persistent talk of transfer interest from Manchester United. It tied him to the club for a long time.

England have responded to his club form with a recall to the senior squad. Hall started against Croatia on the left side, next to his former Newcastle teammate Anthony Gordon. The pair looked just as comfortable together as they did at St James’s Park. Hall’s overlapping runs down the left often create the space Gordon likes to cut inside from.

That link-up is covered in more detail in our Croatia report. The performance has also earned Shearer’s backing and Henry Winter’s England backing. Both point to the same maturity Newcastle fans see every week.

Lewis Hall buzzing for England

The detail behind Hall’s rise backs up the eye test. He held his own against Barcelona in the Champions League knockout stages for Newcastle. That result pointed to the composure now showing up in his England form.

Hall is also in line to make a third successive start for England, against Czechia at Wembley on Tuesday. That depends on team news closer to kick-off. Still, three starts in a row for his country at left-back is a real marker for a player in his early twenties. It suggests he has moved from fringe option to first choice in a short space of time.

Hall is clear about what these performances mean to him. Asked whether his Newcastle roots make every result feel bigger, he said:

“I think so. I’m always proud of every game that I play. I never take it for granted. Yeah, I’m really proud to represent this team and this city.”

What’s next for Lewis Hall

A third successive England start would put Hall firmly on Tuchel’s plans at left-back. Newcastle, meanwhile, keep leaning on him domestically, including in recent results such as the Hull win.

Hall has already shared his energy between league football and cup commitments, among them the Everton draw. His continued presence shows how much the club now trusts him.

Hall still feels the pull of home whenever Newcastle win.

“It’s nice to see when you win the game the atmosphere around the city is obviously so good. Yeah, it’s really good and I’m really happy,” he said.

That bond is what makes the Lewis Hall England return stand out from a routine squad update. A boyhood fan who once pictured himself playing for Newcastle now does it every week. He takes that same conviction into an England shirt too.
