There has not been much excitement around Newcastle United this summer. After a 12th-place finish in the Premier League, there is no European football to look forward to next season.
Ideally, this would be a time to improve the squad. But unfortunately, the Magpies have seen it weakened significantly, with their three best players leaving in quick succession within weeks of each other.
On the other hand, the signings Newcastle United have made might not be ready to come in and immediately make an impact. The pre-season results have shown that.
So, there is a need to bring in more ready-made players before the summer window closes. A Manchester City midfielder seems to be on their radar.
Newcastle working on deal for Man City midfielder
According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle United are working on a deal for Man City midfielder Nico Gonzalez. The Magpies have held exploratory talks.
Gonzalez is believed to have been open to a new challenge after failing to establish himself at Manchester City since his £50 million move. He is reported to be one of a number of targets for Newcastle United as they look to find a replacement for Bruno Guimaraes.
While Gonzalez has never quite cemented himself as a starter at Manchester City, there is a lot to love about his game. At a club where he is given regular opportunities, he could turn into a solid Premier League midfielder.
On paper, it does feel like Newcastle United could turn out to be the kind of team that suits Gonzalez. Let’s see if an agreement can be reached with Manchester City.
Can Newcastle United sign Gonzalez?
Obviously, Newcastle United fans will know the importance of agreeing a deal with the player himself as well. They have already come up short in multiple transfer races this summer.
Victor Munoz ended up joining Liverpool when a move had seemed as good as done. Johan Manzambi picked Aston Villa even after Newcastle United had agreed a deal with SC Freiburg. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg turned down a move to St James’ Park even though Marseille clearly would have preferred him to leave.
So, for one reason or another, Newcastle United simply have not been able to convince players to join the club this summer. Will they break that chain with Gonzalez? Or is he going to be another name added to that list?
It could easily go either way. On one hand, Newcastle United are a club where Gonzalez will get regular chances. On the other hand, he might feel he could get a move to a team that are in a better position to compete for trophies. Not too long ago, he was being linked with a move to Chelsea.
