The Newcastle United midfield is in need of some reconstruction this summer. Sandro Tonali has joined Tottenham Hotspur. And it is widely expected that Bruno Guimaraes will end up with their North London rivals Arsenal. The likes of Joe Willock and Joelinton could be heading for the exit door as well.
This is far from ideal if you are Newcastle United. So many key players leaving in the same window always makes it difficult. So far, they have brought in two new faces in midfield.
Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba have arrived from Ajax and AS Monaco, respectively. But there are serious doubts about whether either is ready to start.
Newcastle United need a more ready-made player to add to their midfield. Someone who will walk straight into the starting XI and end up being the focal point of it. And it appears they might have their eyes on a German international to help in that regard.
Newcastle United open talks to sign ‘new Toni Kroos’
According to reports doing the rounds online, Newcastle United have initiated contact with Angelo Stiller’s camp. The German international is open to joining, and personal terms won’t be an issue. There have been no club-to-club talks yet but there could be developments in the coming days.
If that report is on the mark, then Newcastle United might be preparing for life after Guimaraes by signing Stiller, who is considered one of the best midfielders in the Bundesliga and has drawn comparisons with legendary Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfield maestro Toni Kroos.
Just that comparison should tell you a ton about Stiller’s game. He is one of the best passers in world football right now. The German international is the head of the orchestra in that VfB Stuttgart midfield.
Stiller is very much one of the best midfielders in the world when the ball at his feet. In the Bundesliga, he is in the 90th percentile or higher for successful passes, assists, touches, fouls won, chances created, big chances created, successful crosses and accurate long balls.
In the defensive phase of the game, he can more than hold his own. He is in the 95th percentile for both recoveries and possession won in the final third, and in the 82nd percentile for defensive contributions.
Signing Angelo Stiller would be a coup for Newcastle
There is a reason that clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester United have all been linked with Stiller, even though a move has not happened so far.
So, if Newcastle United do succeed in signing Stiller, they would be getting a very cultured midfielder, who could add a new dimension to the team. And with incoming manager Matthias Jaissle being German, one would imagine that he would already know much about the VfB Stuttgart maestro’s game.
Any talks could start around the €35 million mark, which would be a very reasonable fee to ask for when it comes to a player of Stiller’s pedigree. Let’s see if a move to St James’ Park materialises or this ends up as just mere speculation.
