It would be safe to say that Newcastle United need to make some more quality additions before the summer transfer window closes. They have simply lost too much and not brought in enough in return.
The big voids have been left in midfield. Sandro Tonali has already left. Bruno Guimaraes seems to be heading in the same direction as well. Those were already the two best players the Magpies had coming into the summer window.
But that does not mean that other areas do not need reinforcements. They most definitely do. One of them is their centre-back ranks.
Newcastle United’s centre-back ranks have been ageing for a while now. Dan Burn and Fabian Schar are both 34. Sven Botman has injury problems. So, another addition would make sense there. And it looks like a bid is already being prepared.
Newcastle United ready to bid for centre-back
Earlier today, I reported on the club’s interest in Italian international centre-back Giorgio Scalvini. And it looks like that could be about to grow into something concrete soon.
According to The Sun, Atalanta want £42 million to sanction a Scalvini exit. Newcastle United are prepared to test the waters with a £34 million bid.
It is understood that Scalvini wants a move to the Premier League. That means personal terms are not expected to be an issue for the Italian centre-back.
That is good news for Newcastle United. What is not is the fact that Chelsea recently contacted Scalvini’s representatives to confirm his £42 million valuation.
They could end up making a bid for Scalvini if they are able to find new homes for some of their own centre-backs first. So, Newcastle United might need to move quick in this race.
Does a move for Scalvini make sense?
It would be safe to say that someone like Scalvini would be an interesting addition to this Newcastle United team. He is 22 but has plenty of experience already.
Also, his composure and physicality might be a good fit in the Premier League. Then again, it is almost impossible to predict how that jump will go.
Newcastle United had also been linked with another Serie A centre-back, Fikayo Tomori, recently. But those rumours have gone completely cold.
So, it looks like Newcastle United might have shifted their focus. Is it now on Scalvini? Or is it someone whose name has not come up in the media yet?
