All the talk surrounding Newcastle United over the past few days has been about Eddie Howe and Bruno Guimaraes. And it is very understandable why that has been the case.
Howe has left the club in the middle of pre-season. The Magpies have already found a replacement though. Matthias Jaissle will be arriving from Al-Ahli, after winning back-to-back AFC Champions League Elite titles there. On the other hand, it is hard to imagine how the Magpies will go about replacing Guimaraes, who looks to be on his way to Arsenal.
Interestingly, Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Lucas Bergvall. But those rumours have gone a bit quiet lately. Is it because the Magpies have cooled their interest? Or is it a sign that they are working towards a deal in silence, like they did with Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba?
It is worth pointing out that Bergvall is not the only player Newcastle United have been linked with in recent times. Another one is Djed Spence. And there is some good news for the Magpies’ hopes on the back of Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi’s admission.
Newcastle United handed Djed Spence and Lucas Bergvall double boost by Roberto De Zerbi
According to The Standard, De Zerbi has confirmed that both Spence and Bergvall could leave if that is what they want:
“I repeat what I said to Djed, and to Lucas.
“I would like you to stay if you want to stay. If you don’t want to stay, if you want to leave, then you have to leave.”
Spence is not the first choice option at Tottenham Hotspur at either full-back position. Yet, he was England’s breakout star at the World Cup.
In fact, one could argue that he was England’s most consistent performer at the World Cup while the likes of Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane enjoyed big highs but some lows in important games as well.
Signing someone like Spence would have to be seen as a positive if you are in Newcastle United’s position right now, as he would bring ready-made quality and experience. The Magpies are missing both right now.
Would Bergvall be the right signing for Newcastle?
Newcastle United have been tasked with replacing both Sandro Tonali and Guimaraes in the same window. That would have been difficult, even if the club had an unlimited budget. As things stand, they are working under financial boundaries.
Signing someone like Bergvall would represent a risk. He is 20 years of age and it would not be realistic to expect him to perform at anywhere near those levels.
That being said, the Swedish international does have some decent experience under his belt despite being just 20. He has 78 senior games for Tottenham Hotspur already, while also appearing 14 times for Sweden as well.
It remains to be seen if Newcastle United do end up making a push trying to sign him or decide to go a different route and bring in someone closer to their prime.
