The Newcastle United squad has undergone a lot of changes this summer. New faces have been brought in, but at the same time, quite a few have headed for the exit door as well.
Some of those departures have grabbed the headlines. Anthony Gordon has moved to FC Barcelona in a £70 million deal. Sandro Tonali has joined Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in a club-record £100 million deal.
On the other hand, there are those who have left without much noise around the exit. One such player has now found a new home for himself.
According to Ben Jacobs, Hull City have signed Matt Targett on a free transfer. The English defender was available after leaving Newcastle United.
Targett could be a good signing for Hull City
Targett’s exit is not expected to have a major impact on Newcastle United. That is because he was already out on loan at Middlesbrough last season.
But that does not mean that his spell at Middlesbrough was not a success. He was a regular starter for them on the left flank throughout the season.
Middlesbrough made it all the way to the English Championship play-off final, only to lose to none other than Hull City on the big day.
Now, Targett is set to turn out for that same Hull City team, as he was clearly able to impress them. According to HullLive, he will pen an initial two-year deal and provide competition for Ryan Giles.
Newcastle United have their own problems at left-back right now
Targett is 30 years of age and had made only 47 appearances during his time at Newcastle United. So, his departure might have come at the right time.
That being said, Newcastle United do have their own left-back issues at the moment. Those revolve around the future of Lewis Hall.
It has been suggested that Manchester United want to sign Hall this summer. Chelsea hold an interest in their academy graduate as well, having seen Marc Cucurella depart.
On the other hand, Hall is believed to be seeking the role of a nailed-on starter at St James’ Park, as he weighs up his future with the club.
