This summer transfer window has not been a very positive one for Newcastle United. The latest of their mishaps came when they failed to get a deal over the line to sign Johan Manzambi, even though an agreement had been reached with SC Freiburg.
Manzambi was seen as the replacement for Sandro Tonali, who has joined Tottenham Hotspur this summer in a club-record transfer deal for Spurs.
But unfortunately for Newcastle United, Manzambi was keener on joining Aston Villa instead, and that move was made official not too long ago. And now, it is quite clear why the Villans were so swift in their attempts to sign the Swiss World Cup standout.
Blockbuster Fabrizio Romano update shakes up Premier League
That is because Aston Villa are set to see their best player leave in this window. According to Fabrizio Romano, Morgan Rogers to Chelsea is now here we go.
A club-to-club agreement was reached today with Aston Villa. The £117 million proposal has been accepted. An agreement has been reached with Rogers on personal terms until June 2032 as well.
So, this has to go down as a major coup for Chelsea. They have been successful in signing Rogers ahead of Premier League champions Arsenal.
It also explains why Aston Villa made a big-money move for Manzambi. Not too long afterwards, Rogers’ move to Chelsea looks close to being finalised.
Of course, Newcastle United have not benefited from any of this. On the contrary, they have lost out on a player they had a deal in place to sign.
Who will Newcastle United sign this summer?
Newcastle United have been linked with quite a few players since it became clear that their deal for Manzambi was going to collapse. It remains to be seen if they end up signing any of them.
The most likely one looks to be Danilo of Botafogo. The former Nottingham Forest midfielder has been a standout since returning to Brazil. He was involved at the World Cup as well.
Another player who has been linked with the Magpies is Ederson, who saw a Manchester United move collapse himself. But since then, it has emerged that he has agreed on new terms with Atalanta and might end up staying in Italy.
Newcastle United have also made a failed bid for Lucas Bergvall of Tottenham Hotspur. It is thought to have been in the region of £46 million. Let’s see if they return with a bigger one.
