‘Understood to have changed’ – Lucas Bergvall to Newcastle United transfer twist

Yesterday, it emerged that Newcastle United had seen a bid turned down for Lucas Bergvall by Tottenham Hotspur. The offer was thought to be in the region of £46 million.

Bergvall has long been considered one of the brightest talents at Tottenham Hotspur. So, most saw it as a sign that Spurs were not ready to let him go this summer, despite signing Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes in quick succession and for a combined £185 million.

Now, though, it looks like Newcastle United were not the ones who had actually made the first move when it comes to the Bergvall saga. Instead, it appears to have been his parent club, Tottenham Hotspur, if reports are on the mark.

Surprising update emerges on Lucas Bergvall to Newcastle United transfer situation

According to Lee Ryder, Tottenham Hotspur’s financial situation is understood to have changed after splashing out on signing Tonali from Newcastle United.

Newcastle were offered Bergvall by Tottenham as they look to drum up funds. There is interest but no deal has been done yet. High level talks have taken place. The Magpies are working on other deals too.

So, this update would suggest that it is Spurs who are trying to find a new home for Bergvall, rather than Newcastle United putting in a cold offer for him.

There have also been suggestions that Bergvall is open to exploring a move away from the club. That is understandable, as the youngster has seen his team sign two big-money midfielders this summer, which will affect his game time moving forward if he stays with Spurs.

Would Bergvall be a good fit for Newcastle?

So, judging from this situation, it looks like a move for Bergvall might be a lot more realistic for Newcastle United than first thought. It appears that Tottenham are very open to the idea of the midfielder leaving this summer.

Obviously, a transfer fee would need to be agreed first for any move to happen. That being said, Tottenham’s supposed eagerness could make things a bit easier.

Newcastle United were seemingly willing to pay £46 million to sign Bergvall. How much higher would they be willing to go beyond that figure?

Bergvall might be only 20 years of age, but he has already played 78 games for Tottenham Hotspur. So, he has a decent level of experience under his belt and won’t be the typical youngster signing by any means.

It is also worth mentioning that the Magpies have been linked with the Brazilian international midfield duo of Danilo and Ederson lately, after seeing a move for Johan Manzambi collapse.
