Newcastle United in ongoing talks to sign England international

Newcastle United will be looking to strengthen in several positions across the pitch in this ongoing summer transfer window. And it looks like they have an England international on their radar.

Newcastle United’s transfer window has not been exactly a positive one so far. They have seen key players like Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali leave.

Bruno Guimaraes continues to be heavily linked with a move away as well. Mikel Arteta is supposedly a big fan of the Brazilian midfielder, who has already agreed on personal terms with Arsenal.

Guimaraes is not the only veteran presence that could be headed for the exit door though. Nick Pope’s future at the club is in doubt as well. The 34-year-old has been linked with a move to Ipswich Town, with only a year left on his deal at St James’ Park. Could Newcastle United be looking to replace him with an England international?

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Newcastle United are continuing discussions over a move for Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford.

Newcastle United have had Trafford on their radar for a long time. They have tried to sign him twice in the past, but it did not materialise. Could it finally end up happening this summer?

Trafford is likely to leave Manchester City in this window. He had signed with them last summer with the hope of being the number one between the posts.

The club did end up signing Gianluigi Donnarumma soon afterwards and Trafford found himself playing the cover option for the entire season as a result of that. One would imagine he wants to be a starter.

Would James Trafford be the right signing for Newcastle?

To be very honest, it feels like Trafford could be an excellent signing for Newcastle United. He has proven himself already, even at Manchester City.

He was the cup goalkeeper for Manchester City last season. They ended up winning both the League Cup and the FA Cup. So, he has shown he can be the starting goalie for a team competing to win trophies.

Trafford was excellent on an individual level as well. But that is not expected to earn him a spot as the starter at Manchester City ahead of Donnarumma, even though there has been a change of manager.

Trafford would start for most clubs in the Premier League though. He has enough quality to do so. And he is only expected to get better with time. A move feels like a no-brainer if you are Newcastle United.
