The goalkeeper area is one that is under the microscope at Newcastle United right now. It is clearly viewed as an area where the club can improve. In fact, they have already made one addition between the posts, bringing in Ewen Jaouen from Reims.
The 20-year-old might have done an excellent job in Ligue 2 for Reims before this, but the step up to becoming the starting goalkeeper at once might be a bit too steep. So, expect him to be the cover option next season.
On the other hand, there is an expectation that Nick Pope will be on his way out. He has less than a year left on his Newcastle United deal and is drawing the interest of Ipswich Town, who want the veteran goalkeeper as they return to the Premier League.
It might be the right time for Newcastle United to part ways with the 34-year-old goalkeeper as well. But they would need someone to step into the starting XI immediately. Zion Suzuki of Parma and Japan’s national team number one has been linked with Newcastle United. But it looks like there is only one condition in which the Magpies would look to sign him this summer.
Newcastle United making move for Zion Suzuki is conditional
Suzuki has long been considered one of the most talented young goalkeepers in Europe. He was a standout performer for Japan at the World Cup as well.
But when it comes to Newcastle United, it looks like he is not their number one transfer target when it comes to the goalkeeper position.
According to Football Insider, Newcastle United will only move for Suzuki if they cannot get Manchester City’s James Trafford this summer,
So, it looks like Trafford is the number one choice for Newcastle United. Of course, signing him won’t be straightforward. But a move does not seem impossible either.
Trafford ahead of Suzuki on Newcastle United’s transfer wishlist
It is not hard to understand why Newcastle United might prefer signing Trafford over Suzuki. At the end of the day, the former is a proven option in English football.
Trafford did well enough for Burnley to earn himself a move to Manchester City. Initially, it was thought that he would be the number one there.
But Man City would soon sign Gianluigi Donnarumma as well, and naturally, he was handed the first-team gloves. Trafford was stuck playing as the back-up option in goal.
Trafford is more than good enough to be a starter in the Premier League though. And one would imagine, at least I do, that he is pursuing a move away from Man City this summer in search of first-team football.
