Newcastle United submit £46 million offer for Tottenham Hotspur player

There is not a ton of positivity around Newcastle United at the moment. The Magpies simply have not been able to do enough in the summer transfer market to convince the supporters that the project is moving in the right direction.

This is a team that had finished 12th in the Premier League last season. Now, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon have left, weakening it further. And there is speculation around the futures of Bruno Guimaraes and Lewis Hall as well.

On the other hand, when it comes to incomings, the club have had a tough time as well. A couple of deals had looked as good as done only for them to collapse in the final steps. And a number of players might not even be considering the idea of a move to St James’ Park due to a lack of European football.

Bazoumana Toure, Sean Steur and Ewen Jaouen have been signed. All of them are highly rated youngsters. And it looks like that is the transfer strategy of Newcastle United right now. So much so that a bid for a 20-year-old Tottenham Hotspur youngster has also been put in.

Newcastle United submit bid for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder

Remarkably, Tottenham Hotspur should also be facing the same problems as Newcastle United in the transfer market, after back-to-back 17th-place finishes. But that has not been the case.

They have signed several top talents this summer, including Tonali from Newcastle United. Mateus Fernandes has also been brought in by Spurs in a big-money move.

Of course, that kind of strengthening has raised question marks over the futures of the club’s existing crop of youngsters. And it looks like Newcastle United are trying to take advantage of that.

According to a report from David Ornstein for The Athletic, Tottenham Hotspur have rejected an offer from Newcastle United for Lucas Bergvall. The bid was around £46 million.

Will Newcastle make another bid for Bergvall?

Bergvall is 20 years of age and is considered one of the brightest talents at Tottenham Hotspur. But with the talent that has been brought in this summer so far, it is hard to imagine he will get a ton of football next season.

So, it is understandable why Newcastle United might have tried their luck, looking to sign Bergvall. And it is quite possible that the window might be open, even though the bid was turned down.

Perhaps Tottenham Hotspur are looking for a bigger transfer fee to sanction a move. It remains to be seen if Newcastle United return with a second bid or not.

It is worth mentioning that Newcastle United are in a tight financial situation as well, which has been evident from their activity this summer. So, that might not have a ton of wriggle room when it comes to how much they would be willing to pay to sign Bergvall from Tottenham.
