It would be an understatement to say that things have not gone according to plan for Newcastle United this summer. They have seen key players like Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali leave. On the other hand, their plans to replace them have been met with obstacles as well.
The latest of them was the failed move for Johan Manzambi. Newcastle United had agreed a deal with SC Freiburg to sign the Swiss international midfielder, who enjoyed a standout World Cup campaign.
But Manzambi himself was not ready to join Newcastle United. Instead, he chose to move to Aston Villa. It has now been officially announced as well.
In the aftermath of the last-minute transfer collapse, Newcastle United were linked with a couple of quality midfielders as alternatives. Now, though, it looks like another one of them might be out of reach. At the very least, his transfer valuation will have increased.
Fabrizio Romano drops Ederson update which is bad news for Newcastle United
Ederson had agreed to a move to Manchester United and it looked like a move was only a matter of time. But somehow, it ended up falling apart in the final steps.
Newcastle United were thought to be interested in Ederson, once his Manchester United move collapsed. And considering his elite numbers in Serie A, there was a potential that it could prove to be an excellent signing for the Magpies.
Now, according to Fabrizio Romano, Ederson has signed a new deal at Atalanta until June 2031. The Italian club have shown their trust in the Brazilian midfielder and have opened a new cycle with him staying.
Of course, a contract extension does not automatically mean that Ederson will not leave this summer. But it does make the exit more unlikely. And if Newcastle United want to sign him now, they might have to pay much more than the fee Manchester United had agreed, which was thought to be in the region of €40 million.
Newcastle have been linked with another Brazilian midfielder
Ederson is not the only international Brazilian midfielder to be linked with Newcastle United lately. It looks like they have another one in their sights.
Reports have suggested that Newcastle United have held talks looking to sign Danilo from Botafogo. He already has Premier League experience from his time at Nottingham Forest.
Since returning to Brazil, he has been one of the standout performers there. So much so that he was an important part of Carlo Ancelotti’s setup at the World Cup.
So, signing someone like Danilo might be a positive step for Newcastle United, who have had a tough time signing players in this summer window so far.
They recently made a failed bid looking to sign Lucas Bergvall from Tottenham Hotspur as well. It remains to be seen if that interest leads anywhere of note.
