There has not been much in the name of good news for Newcastle United this summer. The Magpies have completed three signings so far. Bazoumana Toure, Ewen Jaouen and Sean Steur have been brought in.
Admittedly, all three are highly regarded talents. If the Magpies have gotten their scouting right, they might have a trio of quality players in the future.
When you think about the current situation of the squad though, it does not paint the most positive of pictures. They have seen two of their best players leave in the form of Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon. There is a possibility that Bruno Guimaraes could join them. On the other hand, deals for Victor Munoz and Johan Manzambi collapsed when it had looked like moves were set to go through.
Amid all this, there is some rare good news for Newcastle United. It involves Premier League rivals Man Utd and a last-minute decision the Old Trafford outfit have made.
Manchester United make Ederson decision helping Newcastle
According to Fabrizio Romano, Ederson to Manchester United is not expected to be revisited or reactivated at any time this summer.
The discussions involving Manchester United have completely collapsed since Friday. Ederson has also received a new contract proposal from Atalanta.
For so long, it had looked like a mere formality that Ederson would end up joining Man Utd. It was expected to be made official after the World Cup, where he was representing Brazil.
But in an unexpected transfer twist, Manchester United have now pulled out of the move. They have already signed Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. What does that mean for the future of Ederson? Could a move to Newcastle United be on the cards?
Newcastle United were linked with Ederson immediately after Man Utd move collapsed
Interestingly, immediately after it had emerged that Ederson would not be joining Manchester United, news also broke that Newcastle were interested in the Brazilian midfielder.
Obviously, the Magpies are looking to strengthen in midfield after seeing Tonali leave while Guimaraes continues to seek a move to Arsenal as well.
On top of that, they have seen a move for Manzambi collapse as he was more keen on joining Aston Villa. So, it is not hard to see why they might see the Ederson situation as an opportunity.
Now, Romano’s update has made it pretty clear that Manchester United are not planning another change of mind and returning for Ederson. That helps Newcastle’s chances of landing him.
Interestingly, he is not the only Brazilian midfielder Newcastle United have been linked with recently. Danilo is someone they are believed to have been working on signing as well.
