- Arsenal ‘make calls’ under Sandro Tonali transfer
- Newcastle United set £100m asking price
- Man Utd stance on move shifts
Arsenal have ‘made calls’ over the availability of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali over the weekend, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Magpies have already banked £70 million through the sale of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona this window and are currently focused on a first incoming of the summer in Ewen Jaouen.
More exits from St James’ Park are expected ahead of the 2026/27 campaign and it wouldn’t be a surprise if one of those was Tonali.
Arsenal make Sandro Tonali calls in ‘recent days’
The Italy international had been linked with a January move to The Gunners. That came after an injury to Mikel Merino as Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta teased the potential for a marquee Deadline Day arrival.
Ultimately, no concrete move for Tonali was made, but transfer speculation has not ended. The player’s agent has been stoking the fire with quotes about the 26-year-old being on the lookout for a new opportunity.
Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Arsenal are still actively monitoring a potential move for Tonali. Speaking in his latest YouTube video, the transfer specialist said: “As of today, Tonali could be an option for Manchester City, but their focus is on Elliot Anderson, another player really appreciated also by Man United, who are still monitoring the situation, and Sandro Tonali could be an option for more clubs.
“Arsenal made some calls over the recent days for Tonali, so Arsenal are also in the mix. There could be more clubs joining the race for Tonali. Remember, there could be more clubs, so the situation around Sandro Tonali could become interesting.”
Man Utd back away from £100m Newcastle United transfer
Manchester United are in the market for a central midfielder and have been linked with a move for Tonali. Over the weekend, it was claimed that a deal for Tonali could even be the club’s next piece of business, once Ederson is through the door. However, Romano believes the Red Devils have ‘gone cold’ on the player.
That could open up the chance for Arsenal to have a free run at the deal. With Italy failing to qualify for the World Cup, a move for Tonali in the coming weeks could be feasible.
The Magpies may have boosted their funds through the sale of Gordon but at least one other big name departure is expected in order to fund a big restructure this summer.
Newcastle paid £55 million to sign Tonali from AC Milan in the summer of 2023 and widespread reports claim that the club will look to almost double their money with a £100 million price tag slapped on the player this summer.
In February, Tonali’s agent Giuseppe Riso told Tuttosport: “Newcastle are having a hard time letting go of Sandro, and he wants to lead the club to the Champions League.
“These transfer discussions will take place later. We’ll see how the season ends and then we’ll decide what to do.”
