- Cody Gakpo could leave Liverpool after Arne Slot’s sacking
- Newcastle United interested in signing Dutch international
- Tottenham also in the race for Gakpo
Newcastle United’s search for an established attacker this summer could lead them to Liverpool amid recent speculation involving Cody Gakpo’s future.
Reports from England confirm that the Magpies are one of the clubs interested in securing his signature, with his future in doubt after Arne Slot’s departure.
Newcastle United are likely to sign multiple attackers this summer after Anthony Gordon’s departure.
And if Gakpo becomes available, it looks like they could make a move for him.
Newcastle United keeping tabs on Cody Gakpo
TeamTALK report that Newcastle United, Tottenham and Bayern Munich could emerge as potential destinations for Gakpo if Liverpool decide to offload him this summer.
In fact, the Bavarian giants were interested in signing the 27-year-old last summer before shifting focus to Luis Diaz, who has been a massive success at the Allianz Arena since his big-money move.
Earlier this month, Fabrizio Romano provided an update on Gakpo’s situation at Liverpool, with the Reds on the lookout for attacking reinforcements under new manager Andoni Iraola.
“We have to see what’s going to happen around Cody Gakpo in case Liverpool receive an important proposal because Liverpool want to go and strengthen the winger’s position, already lost Mohamed Salah.
“Let’s see if some club arrives with proposal with Cody Gakpo because there is interest in Cody Gakpo.
“Then it’s going to be on Liverpool to decide whether he’s going to stay, he’s going to leave.
“There’s going to be a club decision, with the coach as well, Andoni Iraola, but don’t forget that Liverpool are very busy with wingers.
“Yan Diomande in a fight with Paris Saint-Germain and not only, so Liverpool are living a really important moment to make decisions on the wingers.
“On Ngumoha, the decision is already done.
“Let’s see who is arriving for Cody Gakpo, but, for sure, there is going to be movement at Liverpool, also for wingers incoming to the club.”
Gakpo perfect for Newcastle United
Gordon played out wide and as a centre forward under Eddie Howe, so his departure has left a massive hole in attack.
Gakpo is predominantly a left-winger but has also played centrally – both under Jurgen Klopp and Slot – while also playing a similar role for the Netherlands over the years.
At the age of 27, he has a wealth of experience under his belt and is still young enough to go up a notch or two in the coming years.
If Liverpool don’t quote an outrageous fee for him and are willing to sell, Newcastle United can do a lot worse than a player like Gakpo to complement the likes of Nick Woltemade, Yoane Wissa and Harvey Barnes.
