Newcastle January transfer window: Newcastle must sell to spend in January as UEFA settles and tightens the purse strings

Newcastle January transfer window

The Newcastle January transfer window includes a January shopping list that will depend on who they are prepared to sell. The club’s UEFA settlement leaves little room for new signings unless money first goes out.

That is the situation facing Matthias Jaissle. He is in his first few months as head coach and is working with a young squad that is still taking shape. The Magpies arrive at tonight’s home game against Aston Villa (5.30pm) in 11th place with eight points from six matches. They have lost their last two away games, 4-1 at both Leeds and Coventry.

The financial backdrop

On 30 June, Newcastle reached a three-year agreement with UEFA’s financial watchdog after failing the football earning regulations. The club accepted a €3m fine, and a further €7m was deferred in the event of good conduct. A separate €3m was paid for breaching the spending ratio of 70 per cent in 2025.

According to the agreement, Newcastle United has to provide reports to UEFA in 2026, 2027 and 2028. The club would be punished if its deficit exceeds five million euros. In practice, Newcastle is only allowed to spend half of its additional income from the winter sales.

Newcastle reportedly spent £275m on eight players this summer. That included £51m for Lille forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo on deadline day. The spending underlined the point. Club-record signing Nick Woltemade also joined Juventus on a season-long loan. The Serie A side will cover his wages.

What could change in January?

The board is not going to make any drastic changes. As long as there is no mass exodus of players or injuries, then the squad will stay pretty much the same. Jaissle has already said that he was happy for the possibility of a January transfer window. He feels that he has the best players in the squad, but he also knows that every manager wants to strengthen his position, and he noted that a lot can happen before the door of the January window opens.

However, there are a couple of potential exits that could free up space:

  • Nick Pope: The goalkeeper has remained at the club in the summer despite brief interest from Celtic. His representatives are keeping an eye out, but he can also see out the remainder of his contract and leave on a free transfer. Bayern Munich are purportedly keeping an eye on the situation.
  • Joe Willock: Despite Jaissle’s interest to keep hold of the midfielder, the Turkish side Besiktas remains in the race. A cash sale would be a good move for the club, as they would bring in much-needed funds.

One or two departures would enable Newcastle to bring in one or two players, but there is nothing to suggest a big change in January.

A transition season

Jaissle accepts that the club are in a period of transition. He has praised his players’ attitude but knows that money alone can’t solve their problems.

Results still matter, though, and a poor run could see the board take action and test the limits of what the agreement allows.

For now attention turns to Villa. The home fans will be looking to them to respond after two heavy away defeats.
