- Osula’s form shifts Newcastle’s striker stance
- Premier League and Bundesliga clubs interested
- The fee it would now take for Newcastle to sell
William Osula’s recent form has placed him in a rather unique bracket at Newcastle United ahead of the summer transfer window.
It is thought that almost every player in the squad has a chance to leave the Magpies if the right offer comes in, as the club looks to rebuild. And before the past few weeks, Osula was among the most plausible of departures.
But since his imperious run of form after being trusted in a starting role, not only has the Dane’s valuation skyrocketed, but so has his importance to Eddie Howe and Newcastle United.
This has almost certainly cemented his place in the squad next season and has, in many ways, created a theoretical ‘hands off’ warning to those interested in his services.
What would it take now for Newcastle United to sell?
There is reported interest in Osula this summer. A couple of Bundesliga clubs are thought to be circling once again, and the likes of Everton and Aston Villa are eyeing up a move from the Premier League.
But Newcastle’s previous £30m valuation is thought to have almost doubled, given the profile and form of the Danish forward.
Whether Newcastle would even consider letting Osula go to a rival is also uncertain. The last thing they want to do is create yet another situation like that of Elliot Anderson, where selling to fund the transfer kitty creates a £100m ‘what could have been’ England international that the club must watch in despair.
Essentially, Osula is going nowhere. But if someone does choose to pay that £60m, Newcastle are making six times the profit compared to what they paid Sheffield United.
The most sensible outcome is to take Osula’s form as a sign from the heavens and continue to develop him into the monster he could be. Not only from the Magpies’ perspective, but Osula has earned the chance to continue at St James’ Park.
Osula forces shift in stance with impressive stat
Had you watched Osula at any stage previous to the last few months, you would have seen a forward failing to really show anything to suggest he should be the starting striker.
In fact, most of the Geordie faithful were still pondering the decision to keep the 22-year-old last summer amid the £30m bid from Eintracht Frankfurt.
But through the nurturing and belief of Eddie Howe, Osula has now emerged as the Magpies’ most potent option in the forward areas.
The initial summer plan was said to be an overhaul of the forward department, with at least one of Wissa, Osula and Woltemade heading out of the door, and the most likely of those being Osula.
Now, it would seem Yoane Wissa is in the most perilous position, with Woltemade and Osula striking up what looks like an exciting partnership in the past couple of games.
Perhaps the most damning statistic that shows Osula’s excellence is the Premier League minutes-per-goal ratio, which Osula tops ahead of names like Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Brentford’s Igor Thiago.
Given his potency in scoring goals, something Howe’s men have struggled with in abundance across the season, it would be rather counterintuitive to force the Danish international out the door.
This would likely require another big spend to commission a proven goalscorer, which the Magpies can’t afford to do this summer amid a rebuilding phase.
