Newcastle United stalwart set to quit club alongside Kieran Trippier after 251 appearances

Newcastle United stalwart Kieran Trippier has already confirmed that he will be leaving the club this summer and the defender is set to be joined by other first team stars.

The 35-year-old has spent four years on Tyneside and will go down as a club legend, having arrived in the middle of a relegation battle and helped the team to the Carabao Cup trophy last year. Trippier confirmed his imminent departure in a statement earlier this month.

Last week, it was reported that goalkeeper John Ruddy would also leave the club following the expiry of his contract. The veteran has never made a first team appearance for the Magpies but is a prominent presence in training and the changing room.

Fabian Schar expected to leave Newcastle United

Now, The Athletic report that another high profile exit is expected in Fabian Schar. The 34-year-old has made a huge 251 appearances for the club since joining in 2018 but is out of contract this summer.

The defender has suffered with injury this season and has been sidelined since January with an ankle injury. Newcastle are reported to be looking for a younger replacement to partner Malick Thiaw and will let Schar leave as a free agent.

It remains to be seen where the former Swiss international ends up. He has had previous stints in Germany and in Spain.

Schar on ‘difficult’ 2025/26 campaign at St James’ Park

Even before injury, Schar had seen a decrease in playing time this season with Dan Burn often chosen alongside Thiaw. Speaking earlier in the campaign, he said: “Being on the bench has been quite difficult actually. It wasn’t an easy situation.

“I think I did pretty well at the start of the season. Then I had the concussion, out for three games, and I hadn’t done anything wrong or played bad – but it’s very hard to get back in the team.

“It’s very difficult, it was a new situation which has never been the case in the last four years. A lot of things which were new and not easy.

“It’s something I know will happen because I’m getting older but I don’t want it to happen. I still feel I can bring a lot to the team.

“I just want to be on the pitch and do the same thing I’ve tried to do over the last seven years and leave my heart on the pitch.”
