Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle singled out Sean Steur when asked which player had surprised him most during a supporters’ Q&A earlier this week.
The teenage midfielder earned praise for his maturity and confidence, providing an encouraging assessment of his progress on Tyneside.
According to NUFC Blog’s account of the event, Jaissle generally avoided highlighting individuals but made an exception for Steur.
He described the 18-year-old Dutchman as an example of Newcastle’s “brave way”.
Sean Steur earns backing from Newcastle boss
The qualities Jaissle highlighted are significant for a young midfielder adjusting to first-team football. His praise focused on how Steur handles that responsibility, as well as the confidence he brings to the pitch.
Steur has also gained further international experience during the break.
He started as the Netherlands U21s beat Slovenia 4-2 on Friday, helping create their equaliser after the hosts went ahead.
His effort forced a save before Ayoub Oufkir converted the rebound. The Netherlands subsequently secured the win through second-half goals from Ernest Poku and Kees Smit.
That involvement followed his U21 debut against Norway last week.
Jaissle’s comments predate the Slovenia match, but they provide useful club context for Steur’s international progress. Newcastle’s head coach has already noticed the maturity behind his performances.
The next challenge is to turn that positive impression into consistent contributions when club football resumes.
