  • Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon linked with transfer exit
  • Magpies should spend £75m fee on two Premier League stars
  • Eddie Howe must replace players smarter this summer

Reports suggest that Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon may be on his way out of St James’ Park, with German giants Bayern Munich making him a target for the summer. If he is to leave, the Magpies want £75 million.

Whether Eddie Howe is still in charge or not, the club need reinforcements through the door in what has been a challenging campaign. They still have quality, which they haven’t got enough out of – such as Nick Woltemade – but additions are needed.

A Premier League signing didn’t work last summer with Yoane Wissa, who has struggled to justify expectations, but two players could up the level at the club.

Newcastle United in need of a centre back transfer

Malick Thiaw has settled down well since moving to England last summer, though he hasn’t had an ideal partner next to him.

Sven Botman and Fabian Schar have both been sidelined for several months, which has exposed their lack of dependable options, while Dan Burn is ageing and has failed to provide security when he has played.

Brighton’s Paul Van Hecke would be an amazing option in the Magpies’ ranks, and it seems he will be open to a move this summer. It’s reported that he is looking to make the next step in his career.

Newcastle may have regressed this season, but Van Hecke could still see St James’ Park as the ideal place to lead a new defensive rebuild.

The Dutchman isn’t afraid to engage in battles with forwards, though it’s his ball-playing ability which makes him a highly rated player.

It’s understood that they would want around £50 million, as per talkSPORT. That’s a lot of the fee they could receive for Gordon, but it would be wise money spent.

Leeds United star could add valuable depth

The Newcastle squad have depth in most areas, but the midfielders have struggled this season.

Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Lewis Miley have all been injured in 2026, while summer signing Jacob Ramsey has yet to get up to speed on Tyneside.

Leeds look set to remain in the Premier League, and they are to contest an FA Cup semi-final later this month.

Ao Tanaka was sensational in their championship campaign but has become a bit of a squad option this season, after they signed Anton Stach.

Just like the Brighton player, the 27-year-old is open to a move this window, and it would be around £10 million.

Teams from the Premier League and Germany are interested, and with Newcastle needing extra bodies in the middle of the park, signing the Japanese international would allow them to make changes when necessary.

Both players would fit their model of bringing in players on the verge of their prime, while offering Premier League-ready quality, and it would allow them to pursue higher-risk signings in other areas.

The club need to learn from last year’s sale of Alexander Isak, as their funds seemed to have gone to waste; Gordon’s fee needs to be spent wisely. Van Hecke and Tanaka are the signings that must be considered, offering quality, experience and depth all in one.
