Newcastle United must sign ‘special’ £35m World Cup winger over Victor Munoz
  • Newcastle United should swoop for Crysencio Summerville
  • Is West Ham man a better signing than Victor Munoz?
  • Summerville on fire for the Netherlands

Newcastle United are in the process of finalising a £25 million move for Osasuna man Victor Munoz, but are the Magpies prioritising the right signing?

Eddie Howe must replace the 22 goal contributions lost through the sale of Anthony Gordon to FC Barcelona and appears to have identified Munoz as the man to do so.

The 22-year-old winger impressed with seven goals and five assists in La Liga last season. However, there’s another player for sale who managed those same stats in the more tricky Premier League last season.

Newcastle United must consider £35m Crysencio Summerville transfer

That is West Ham forward Crysencio Summerville. The former Leeds United man is expected to leave the London Stadium this summer following relegation to the Championship.

Hammers News claim that the player is valued at around £35 million with AS Roma the latest European giant to be sniffing around a deal. The Magpies should certainly rival the Serie A outfit – Summerville is worth the extra £10 million on Munoz.

There’s no doubting that the Osasuna wide man is an exciting talent but it’s always a gamble on whether a player can adjust when coming to the Premier League.

Summerville is proven in the top flight. What’s more, he is a player in blistering form with seven Hammers goals last season came after the turn of the year.

Those included strikes against Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland. At 24 years old, the winger has his best years ahead of him.

Summerville in red hot form at World Cup as Netherlands begin campaign

Should the Magpies need any more convincing, they need to look no further than the Netherlands’ 2-2 draw with Japan last night.

Summerville scored the nation’s second goal and was hailed for his efforts. The West Ham man played alongside Cody Gakpo and Donyell Malen, yet was named the nation’s ‘best attacker’ who scored a ‘brilliant goal’ by Sports Illustrated.

Reuters also hailed the player for ‘bending a perfectly placed strike’ past Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. Speaking after the match, Summerville explained that he had been drinking up tips shared by Premier League legend Ruud van Nistelrooy.

He said: “I felt joy and pride, I can’t really describe it. It was a childhood dream come true! I think my family are all super proud. I’m thankful to God.

“Ruud (van Nistelrooy) and I work very closely together, especially on finishing,” he explained. “He’s given me a few tips, on how to become an even better finisher, how to position myself and my body positioning.

“I had promised him that if I scored, I would run to him as a way of saying ‘thank you’!”

While there is rightfully excitement over the potential of Munoz, could Newcastle United be missing out on a Gordon replacement already in superb form, proven in the Premier League, and on the transfer list?
